Danielle Lineker: How to get lovely legs for summer

Having hidden them under trousers and opaque tights for the better part of six months, I’m heading to LA and facing the frightening reality of getting my legs out.

And we all know what that means. Waxing, toning and tanning time is officially here again.

We might not all have pins like Kate Bosworth but there’s no excuse for pale, pasty, hairy legs. So, if you’re planning an outing for your pins then the first thing you need to do is tackle hair removal. Whether you wax, shave or epilate you need to get organised.

Waxing is a good option as it lasts up to three weeks but professional waxing isn’t cheap and remember you need to leave 48 hours before you apply any fake tan to your legs afterwards.

A friend of mine has been raving about the Braun Silk-epil, (£39.69, www.amazon.co.uk) a brilliant hair removal device that’s perfect because you can take it on holiday with you. I can’t promise it’s painless as it pulls out the hair from the root but once you get the hang of it it’s really easy to use, and after the initial investment it will save you money on waxing appointments.

If you’re looking for the perfect razor then I swear by the Gillette Venus (£4.99, www.boots.com) because the gel bars make it smooth and easy to use. As with all hair removal techniques, make sure you exfoliate your legs to avoid ingrowing hairs.

Sadly, I don’t have time to hit the gym before I go away but I am a firm believer in the saying, “if you can’t tone it, tan it”. And in the summer months fake tan should be every girl’s best friend.

My absolute favourite is Fake Bake’s Lipo Bronze, (£20.50, www.fakebake.co.uk) that combats the appearance of cellulite and leaves legs tanned and toned ready for the beach, and not a treadmill in sight!

Natural fake tan ‘the safest way to glow’

Natural fake tan 'the safest way to glow'If you yearn for that just-back-from-holiday glow, the British Skin Foundation (BSF) has advised that natural fake tan is the safest way to achieved an all-year round bronze.

The advice comes as new legislation was introduced in England and Wales, which will see sunbed operators that allow under-18s to use the equipment face fines of up to £20,000.

Bevis Man, spokesperson for the BSF, said: "The safest way to get a healthy glow, without the associated risks of sunbathing or using a sunbed, is by using fake tan, whether it's by going to get a spray tan or simply something that you buy and apply to the skin yourself."

He added that the organisation would "never recommend" putting yourself at the risk of overexposure to harmful UV rays in the attempt to get a tan.

Last week, Cancer Research UK launched its 2011 SunSmart campaign and reealed that two Brits under the age of 35 are diagnosed with the most serious form of skin cancer each day

Burgundy babe Sarah Harding matches shoes, belt and lipstick in nude jumpsuit

Sarah Harding was making the most of the spring heat wave last night by baring her legs in a skimpy nude jumpsuit on a night out in London.

The Girls Aloud star showed off her fake tan in the short sleeved, low cut, thigh high one-piece, which was almost the same shade as her skin.

To brighten up the ensemble though, Sarah matched her burgundy shoes, belt and lipstick alongside some chunky gold chains.

She was having a night out at her favourite haunt, Gilgamesh, in Camden.

Harding was at the same club last Saturday night too and is a regular at the glamorous bar.

The 29-year-old appeared to be letting her hair down after a stressful week, which saw her fiancé Tom Crane face a legal debacle over allegedly owing 18 months’ rent for a former flat.

Belly Dance Forums > Dance from, and inspired by, the Near and Middle East > Beauty and Fitness

Hey guys.

I've never ever fake tanned and was wondering which brands people use and if tanning mitts are any good? And any tips you can offer me?

The reason I want to tan is because I'm having an experiemental few months and thought I'd give it a go, but don't want to look like I've been tango'd. Also wen i went home for xmas, all my family said I had gone all pale (cause they're all dark) and it didn't suit me :-( and since I don't live in a sunny place I thought I'd best top up on some fake sun in a bottle.

Facing 50, feeling fab!

Since appearing on Dancing on Ice I've been having spray tans every week and I've become hooked.

They make you look slimmer and feel more confident. Everybody on the show has them – even the men. Well, we have to look brown against the ice! The show's make-up artists use BeauBronz, which is an organic fake tan (www.beaubronz.co.uk) and I love it.

There are some great DIY fake tans, too, and I rate Johnson's Holiday Skin (from Boots and supermarkets), which is a moisturiser that builds to a natural-looking tan. Another trick is to apply a light layer to your face before bed. You'll wake up glowing and looking refreshed.

My daughter runs her own spray tan business and told me that spray tan parties are becoming popular. A group of women get together and have wine, while taking it in turns to be spray tanned in a pop-up booth. Sounds like the perfect girls' night in!

Fake Tan Tips

Although self-tanning products have been greatly improved, it is not infallible. When you jet off on holiday, the last thing you want is to feel you've been tangoed or have a body covered with irregular stripes where your artificial tan gone wrong!

The safest way to get a great fake Tan Sexy is of course an appointment with a professional. But after you've booked your vacation and I bought your wardrobe capsule, fork a bunch of tickets for a fake tan pro may seem a bit much. It's okay, because you can get excellent results at home with a little care and effort.

Before you begin, make sure you have the following:

False-tanning product
A long-handled sponge
Self-Tan remover
vaseline
tanning-mitt or latex gloves self
hair band or links

You may be worried about what kind of color you get with your fake-tanner. If so, choose a discrete patch of skin (try your stomach, for example) and apply a little tan one week in advance. The color will develop within hours and you will be able to see this kind of result you get. Remember Tan this year is all about subtlety – a light sweet and sexy instead of a dark tan, if the products are lightweight, medium term are the best in most cases.

To avoid scratches, you must prepare your skin properly, which takes a little time. On the eve of self-tanning, exfoliating. If you shave or wax, it is time to do so. If you exfoliate after tanning, your tan will fade more quickly and you're much more likely to have streaks if you do not. For difficult areas (like knees, elbows and back of your ankles), exfoliate twice.

The night before applying self-tanner, make sure you moisturize. Make sure your skin is hydrated when you apply self-tanner or the result could end up uneven. If this is not too hot, wear long pants and sleeves to bed to keep as much moisture as possible.

When it comes to the application of your self-tanner, vaseline slide first on your nails and eyebrows. Start with the ankles and work your way slowly the body for good, even with a blanket. Apply less products in areas such as knees, elbows and ankles to avoid dark spots. Remember to use a tanning glove or latex gloves to apply for a tan and avoid the dreaded orange palms gift! Do not shower for at least several hours after application. Set aside a set of clothes to wear dark, loose while your self-tanner its magic, because many false-tanners containing a bronzer that is easily dislodged.

Even if you use a tanning product of progressive, you still need to mix and rub well. If you use a spray, hold at arms length: you get a fine mist that way. This can be frustrating when you do not have much time, but believe me – the results will be worth it!

Tanner When applying to your face, half and half mix with your daily moisturizer. Apply only a small amount of your eyelids and under eyes. Remember you can always slip out additional products with your mover faux tan. If your skin is particularly dry or more than forty years, try to use a tanning product for the face collagen for additional benefits. Otherwise, try a gradual tanner to build the color slowly.

If you're afraid to try false Tanner on your face, a look similar can be achieved with the rigorous application of tanning makeup.

To avoid clogged pores, exfoliate gently every two days. With a light, the color of the tan should not decrease. Being part of your beauty routine scrub.

Remember, though: self-tanner does not protect your skin against the sun! Make sure to use at least SPF 30 when in full sun. It will not diminish your tan and protects your skin.

Happy tanning!

Fake It Instead of Bake It with Lavish Tan

It's still a bit too cold in Venice to sunbathe, but that doesn't mean you can't get a tan.

In fact, health-conscious, body-conscious Venetians can get a head start on the summer beach bums by hitting up Lavish Tan on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. The 99-percent organic "airbrush tanning" salon practically personifies Venice's brand of Southern California style.

Banish the thought of Snooki. Lavish Tan offers organic, apple-based hues that actually smell good, even without the optional fragrances.

The key to Lavish Tan is partners Kelsey Jones (who grew up in Venice) and Alex Dexter. After meeting at a tanning bed salon where they both worked, the two got off the UV kick after Jones was diagnosed with skin cancer at age 19.

Despite experiences like Jones', a study in December reported that 18 percent of women had used a tanning bed in the previous 12 months. Six percent of men reported using the method, which uses artificial ultraviolet light to stimulate melanin production.

But according to the National Cancer Institute, "Women who use tanning beds more than once a month are 55 percent more likely to develop malignant melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer."

Conscientious tanners are coming to realize that spray tanning is the safer option, and the industry is growing, according to a June 2010 report by market analysis firm IBISWorld.

Roman Zwolak, who authored the report, noted that there was a "significant shift" to spray-on tans.

But no one wants to be orange. Jones and Dexter knew they could do better than the traditional fake 'n bake color that has become synonymous with the spray tan (again, see Jersey Shore). Jones and Dexter worked with a chemist to find a browner, more natural hue.

Their experiment, during which Dexter said they were "plaid" with trial colors, seems to have paid off. Despite the fact that tanning salons face a 30 percent turnover rate, according to Zwolak, the young Abbot Kinney boutique reports that business is healthy.

Sessions are by-appointment only, and with an upcoming feature in Allure magazine and cameos on WE's Bridezillas, expect "lavish" tans to be all over Venice—not that you'll be able to tell who's faking.

Single, total body sessions are $59. Packages and partial tans available.
